2012 - A great year for the horse. Steven Spielberg's 'War Horse' has
arrived in cinemas. And as a "gift" for the Queen on the occasion of her Jubilee, the British Musem is to hold a
major exhibition on the horse through the ages - from newly excavated Saudi Arabian rock carvings to Victorian London's
dung dilemma. (24 May - 30 September)
Classics reruns - have you spotted 'Bonanza!' and 'High Chaparral?'
Two of TV's greatest western (family viewing) series from the 1960s are
currently showing on satellite TV.
And Bonanza is out on DVD. You can collect the series, together with
a colourful guide, from outlets like WHS.
See www.bonanzadvdcollection.com for more details.
Its big impact back in the 1960s and early 1970s came from
the colourful landscapes - and the horses. Back then, I thought Little Joe the best looking Cartwright, and his little black
and white pinto horse Cochise the best looking horse. Now I'm leaning more towards moody Adam Cartwright - and Ben Cartwright's
lovely Dun horse.
Seen from a present day viewpoint, yes, the soundtrack's a little creaky, yes, the plots
seem a more than a bit tame and a little slow - but it's still well worth watching for the horses.
As their blurb says, Saddle up for an unforgettable ride on the Ponderosa!
